Etymology

εφοπλ- (efopl-, to stock ship, equip, get ready) +‎ -ιστής (-istís, -ist, -er), a calque of French armateur (literally one who "arms" or equips a ship).[1] The first component, a prefixed form of the verb εφοπλίζω (efoplízo), is synchronically analyzable as επι- (epi-, on-) +‎ οπλίζω (oplízo, to arm, equip). First attested 1840.
