Etymology[edit]

Loaned through an Aramaic form attested as Jewish Babylonian Aramaic זזניא‎, זזנייא‎, Mishnaic Hebrew זזנין‎, Classical Syriac ܙܺܽܝܙܳܢܳܐ(zīzānā, ryegrass), from Sumerian 𒍣𒍝𒀭 (zizān, wheat). See also living Arabic زِوَان(ziwān) for the term’s semantic range.
