Literary loan translation from Romance (French volcan, Italian vulcano), from ancient Greek ἡφαίστειον (neuter form of ἡφαίστειος (hēphaísteios) “belonging to Hephaestus”), scil. ὄρος (óros) “mountain” or such.[1]
