Etymology[edit]

From Gaulish carnon (horn), from Proto-Celtic *karnos, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₂-. From the same root are κέρας (kéras, horn), κάρᾱ (kárā, head) and κάρηνον (kárēnon, head; mountain top).
