Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Perhaps from κέρκος (kérkos, tail). Could also be of Semitic origin, compare Classical Syriac ܩܪܩܘܪܐ (qarqūrāʾ, boat), reshaped under the influence of κέρκος (kérkos) and οὐρά (ourá, tail). Compare also Latin cercūrus, Old Armenian կուր (kur).
