From Byzantine Greek κουνούπιον (kounoúpion), from Koine Greek κωνώπιον (kōnṓpion), from Ancient Greek κώνωψ (kṓnōps, mosquito), possibly ultimately from Egyptian ḫnws (a kind of stinging insect).[1]
