Etymology[edit]

From Ancient Greek κυδώνιον (kudṓnion), shortening of μηλοκυδώνιον (mēlokudṓnion, quince), ultimately from Κυδωνία (Kudōnía, Cydonia). See also Latin cotoneum and Italian cotogno.
