Probably from Proto-Indo-European *mh₂ǵyéti, from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂ǵ-, *meh₂ḱ- (to knead). Cognates include Sanskrit मचते (macate), Latin mācerō, and Proto-West Germanic *makōn, English make.
