From Proto-Indo-European *ksunyo-. Cognates include Latin novācula, saucius, Old English besnyþian, Sanskrit क्षर (kṣara, melting away, perishable), and Avestan 𐬖𐬲𐬁𐬭 (γžār, flow fast).
