Etymology

[edit]

Schulze compare the word with Sanskrit सीता (sītā, furrow), सीर (sīra, plough) and सीमा (sīmā, frontier, boundary, edge), which is semantically and formally quite possible. Beekes suggests a common derivation from Proto-Indo-European *soHi-r- (furrow).
