Etymology

Schulze compare the word with Sanskrit सीता (sītā, “furrow”), सीर (sīra, “plough”) and सीमा (sīmā, “frontier, boundary, edge”), which is semantically and formally quite possible. Beekes suggests a common derivation from Proto-Indo-European *soHi-r- (“furrow”).
