Etymology
[edit]Traditionally analyzed as *πεδ-ϝλῡ-τρα (*ped-wlū-tra), a compound of πούς (poús, “foot”) + ἔλυτρον (élutron, “covering”). Nevertheless, monosyllabic ϝλυ- and its length are surprising.
