Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *perḱ- (motley, coloured). Cognate with Old Irish erc (perch, salmon) (from Proto-Celtic *ɸerkos) and Proto-Germanic *furhnō (trout). Related also to περκνός (perknós, dusky) and πέρκος (pérkos, kind of hawk).
