Etymology[edit]

From παίπᾰλον (paípalon, steep place) +‎ -εις (-eis). Connection with various similar-looking but semantically distant words such as παιπάλη (paipálē, fine flour) and παιπάλιμος (paipálimos, subtle) is uncertain.
