[edit]Borrowed from Italian piccion(e) (as a dish) + ending -ι (-i). The change [o] > [u]
- either from a closed pronunciation of [o] the Italian word, or from southern dialect pic(c)iuni which was perceived as singular -ι noun [1]
- or, because of the presence of [n],[1] or influenced by older nouns ending in -ούνι like πιγούνι n (pigoúni, “chin”), κουδούνι n (koudoúni, “bell”).[2]
