Uncertain. Perhaps related to Proto-Celtic *slēxsantī (thigh) and Sanskrit प्लेहते (plehate, to go), suggesting a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pleygʰ- (to go, move). Not related to Proto-Slavic *plęsati (to dance).
