From Byzantine Greek πουλλίν (poullín), from Koine Greek πουλλίον (poullíon, diminutive of ποῦλλος (poûllos)), itself either from Latin pullus or alternatively from Ancient Greek πῶλος (pôlos, foal).

Cognate with Mariupol Greek плы (ply).
