Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The formation can be compared with μαλακός (malakós, soft, light; effeminate) and τριβακός (tribakós, rubbed, worn), but the etymology is unknown. Furnée connects σαυκός (saukós, dry), which very strongly suggests Pre-Greek origin for this word.
