Ancient Greek

Etymology

From Semitic, the same source of Latin simila (wheat flour), Aramaic סְמִידָא /‎ ܣܡܻܝܕܳܐ (səmīḏā), from Akkadian 𒆠𒅔𒆠𒅔𒄯𒄯 (/samīdu/, a type of fine groats, coarse flour, semolina), related to Akkadian 𒀀𒊏𒄯𒄯 (/samādu/, to grind fine). Borrowed through Hittite where -alla-, -alli- is an adjective formant.
