From Proto-Indo-European *dʰeyǵʰ-. Cognates include Sanskrit देग्धि (degdhi), Latin fingō, Avestan 𐬛𐬀𐬉𐬰𐬀 (daēza, wall), and Old Armenian դէզ (dēz).
