Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

According to Beekes, probably from Pre-Greek or some other language, based on the interchange of suffixes in the Mycenaean cognates. The word formally fits the instrument names in "-αλη" and "-αλο-", like σκυτάλη (skutálē) and γύαλον (gúalon).[1]

A borrowing relationship with Iranian (compare Persian پیاله (piyâle, cup, bowl)) has been suggested,[2] though as the Greek is itself thought to be a loanword, the ultimate direction is unclear.
