If the meaning "north" is correct, then probably a borrowing from a semitic language - compare Arabic شَمَال (šamāl), Ugaritic 𐎌𐎎𐎀𐎍 (šmảl), Biblical Hebrew שְׂמֹאל, all meaning "north, left"
