Etymology

Borrowed from Ancient Greek Ὀδησσός (Odēssós), the name of an ancient Greek colony which supposedly was located near the present location in Ukraine and which itself was named after a larger, better known city located at modern Varna, Bulgaria. The name was given to the city in 1795 at the suggestion of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
