Attested in Classical Mongolian as ᠰᠡᠯᠡᠩᠭᠡ (Selengge) or ᠰᠡᠯᠢᠩᠭᠡ (Selingge).

Initial sibilant С- (S-) had irregularly not debuccalised to Һ- (H-).
