Etymology

18th century, from абазы (abazy, Abazins) + suffix -ин (-in), denoting nationality. From Abaza абаза (abaza, Abazins, Abkhaz).

Cognate with the Abkhaz endonym аҧсуа (apswa), Adyghe абадзә (Abazins), Turkish abaza (Abkhaz), also perhaps Ancient Greek Ἀψῑλαι (Apsīlai, Apsilae) and Old East Slavic обезы (obezy).
