Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠠᠮᠢᠲᠠᠨ (amitan, creature), from Middle Mongol ᠠᠮᠢᠲᠠᠨ (amitan, grammatically plural orantive), from Proto-Mongolic *amitan. By surface analysis, амь (amʹ, breath; life) +‎ -тан (-tan, substantive ornative suffix). Cognate with Buryat амитан (amitan), Kalmyk әмтн (ämtn), etc.
