From Turkic. Compare Ottoman Turkish خربز(harbüz), خربزه(harbüze), Tatar карбыз (qarbız), Bashkir ҡарбуз (qarbuz), Turkish karpuz. Ultimately from Persian خربز(xarboz). Cognate with Ukrainian гарбуз (harbuz).
