Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *arśəms, possibly from Proto-Finno-Ugric *arwa (“price, value”). Compare Finnish arvo (“value”), arvata (“to guess”), Estonian aru (“reason”). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hargʰás, whence Sanskrit अर्घ (argha, “worth, value”).
