From Proto-Turkic *(i)āka (“elder brother; uncle”).
Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (aqa, “elder brother”), Kazakh аға (ağa, “elder brother; uncle”), Kyrgyz ага (aga, “elder brother”), Southern Altai ака (aka, “elder brother”), Crimean Tatar ağa (“elder brother; uncle”), Turkish ağa (“master, boss”), Yakut аҕа (ağa, “elder; father”).
