Appears to be of a substrate/onomatopoeic origin, compare Bashkir бәр-бәр (bər-bər, “a call for sheep”).

Possibly from (para-)Iranic substratum, compare Persian بره (barre, “lamb”), Middle Persian [script needed] (bārān, “sheep, lamb”), from Proto-Indo-European *urh₁en- (“lamb”).

   Musa ğələjhij-ssələmdeŋ kötöwendə 15 meŋləgən harıq bulğan. Kis hanaha, ber bərəs tulmaj ikən.

   There were some 15 thousand sheep in Musa's herd (peace be upon him). When he counted (his sheep) in the evening, one lamb was missing.
