From Old East Slavic вѣжливои (věžlivoi, experienced, versed), itself from вѣжливои (věžlivoi, knower, competent), from Proto-Slavic *věďa, from *věděti (to know). Compare Old Church Slavonic невѣжда (nevěžda, ignorant). See also -ливый (-livyj).
