From Proto-Slavic *grana (cognate with dialectal or obsolete Bulgarian гран ‎(gran)/гранка ‎(granka)), from Proto-Indo-European, cognate with German Granne ‎(awn), Old English granu ‎(moustache) and Old Norse grǫn ‎(a pine tree) (whence Danish gran ‎(spruce)). Compare Old Norse grein ‎(branch) (whence Danish gren).
