Inherited from Proto-Slavic *grana (cognate with dialectal or obsolete Bulgarian гран (gran)/гранка (granka)), from Proto-Indo-European, cognate with German Granne (awn), Old English granu (moustache) and Old Norse grǫn (a pine tree) (whence Danish gran (spruce)). Compare Old Norse grein (branch) (whence Danish gren).
