Etymology[edit]
Unclear. Perhaps from жмя́ (žmjá, “to squeeze”) (dialectal) + -за (-za) (< *gъmьdza). Compare dialectal Serbo-Croatian гма̑зд (“swarm”), Russian го́моз (gómoz, “mob, pack”).
