Etymology[edit]

From Classical Mongolian ᠳᠡᠭᠦᠦ (degüü), from Middle Mongol ᠲᠡᠺᠦ (tekü), from Proto-Mongolic *dexü. Cognate with Buryat дүү (düü), Kalmyk дү (), Daur ᡩ᠋ᡝ᠋ᠣ (deo), etc. Compare also Manchu ᡩ᠋ᡝ᠋ᠣ (deo).

  1. younger sibling or cousin (often used to refer to other blood relatives and acquaintances who are younger)
    Манай дүү Америкт англи хэл сурч байна.
    Manaj düü Amerikt angli xel surč bajna.
    My younger sibling is studying English in America.
    Тэр хүн миний дүү.
    Ter xün minii düü.
    That person is my sister (or my brother in a case of male person).
