Inherited from Old Ruthenian елефа́нтъ (elefánt), borrowed from Old Church Slavonic е҆лефа́нтъ (e҆lefántŭ), е҆лефа́нтесъ (e҆lefántesŭ, elephant), further borrowed from Ancient Greek ἐλέφᾱς (eléphās) (nominative plural ελέφαντες (eléphantes)). Cognate with archaic Russian элефа́нт (elefánt, elephant).
