Etymology

Formed from за- (za-) +‎ здріти (zdrity). From Old East Slavic зазьрѣти (zazĭrěti, to judge), зьрѣти (zĭrěti, to see), from Proto-Slavic *zьrěti.

Cognate with Polish zazdrościć.
