Etymology

From Russian за́мок (zámok, “castle”), itself from Czech zamek (“lock, castle”), which is a calque of German Schloss.

Parallel to the native Bulgarian замка (zamka, “snare, knot (that locks)”), from Proto-Slavic *zamъka.
