Etymology[edit]

Back-formation from зау́мный (zaúmnyj). Coined by Russian poet, artist, and theorist Aleksei Kruchyonykh.

  1. (colloquial, countable) bollocks, nonsense (that which is silly, illogical, and lacks any meaning, reason, or value; that which does not make sense)
  2. (historical, poetry, uncountable) zaum (linguistic experiments in sound symbolism and language creation of Russian Cubo-Futurist poets such as Velimir Khlebnikov and Aleksei Kruchenykh)
