Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *zъlodějь. By surface analysis, злы (zly) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ дзе́яць (dzjéjacʹ). Cognates include Ukrainian зло́дій (zlódij), Polish złodziej with the same meanings. The Russian злоде́й (zlodéj) means "villain".
