Nikolai Gogol is especially known for his extensive use of these puns in his texts. In 1919 the Russian formalist Boris Ejchenbaum wrote an article about Gogol's short story "The Overcoat" in which he addresses Gogol’s use of such puns. The article has become a classic in literary formalism.
