Inherited from Old East Slavic копие (kopije), from Proto-Slavic *kopьje (see details of derivation there), from *kopati, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kop-, probably ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kep- (to strike, beat). Compare Russian копьё (kopʹjó).
