From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kop-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kep-. Baltic cognates include Latvian kapât (to chop, hew), Lithuanian kapóti (to chop, hew), Old Prussian enkopts (buried). Indo-European cognates include Ancient Greek κόπτω (kóptō, to beat, to hit).
