Etymology[edit]
From ко́б(ец) (kób(ec), “small hawk, Pernis apivorus (European honey buzzard)”) + -чик (-čik), from Proto-Slavic *kobьcь. Per Vasmer, probably cognate with English hawk, Old High German habuh (“hawk”), Old Norse haukr (“hawk”).
