From ко́б(ец) (kób(ec), small hawk, Pernis apivorus (European honey buzzard)) +‎ -чик (-čik), from Proto-Slavic *kobьcь. Per Vasmer, probably cognate with English hawk, Old High German habuh (hawk), Old Norse haukr (hawk).
