From English condom. The pronunciation as кондо́м instead of ко́ндом could be an influence by German Kondom.

Became more common after 1990 through coverage of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, though attested from at least 1886 in medical literature; it became popularly mispronounced as гондо́н (gondón), now vulgar.

     Of all that has been tested to date, the best measure for protecting oneself from venereal diseases, including gonorrhea, has turned out to be putting on the penis before the act of intercourse an extensible, impenetrable sheath made of very thin rubber or from lamb intestines and bearing the name of its inventor, the Englishman Condom, or “capote anglaise.” Unfortunately, these sheaths do not always achieve their intended purpose. – Not to mention all the difficulties that arise in attaching them to the penis immediately before the act of sexual intercourse, nor the considerable reduction of sensation experienced during the act due to covering the penis with even the thinnest material, condoms frequently come loose or even tear, as a result of which the barrier to infection is destroyed.

     I was proud to be the first woman, and perhaps the first, to talk about condoms on screen. "Vzglyad" had previously touched on the previously taboo topic of AIDS patients in the USSR, and the producers thereof asked me to talk about the American approach to this disease. When packing my suitcase before leaving for Moscow, I put in it several popular brochures telling young people about AIDS. One of them was called: “In Search of Mr. Condom.”
