Russenorsk[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Norwegian Nynorsk kor i fra (wherefrom), northern dialectal form of kvar ifrå. The origin of "ы" is not clear, because per Norwegian pronunciation the /r/ sound before /i/ in this case is very close to Russian /rʲ/, which would result in spelling with letter "и" (кури фра).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /kʊrɨˈfra/ (Russian accent)

Phrase[edit]

куры фра (kury fra)

  1. where are you going to?
  2. who are you?

Usage notes[edit]

Despite the translations given by Maximov and Shergin, the real meaning of the phase was probably "where are you from?"
