From köläm "volume; amount", a regional (Central Asian) innovation. No consensus exists on its derivation.

Cognate with Tatar күләм (küläm), Kazakh көлем (kölem), Kyrgyz көлөм (kölöm), Uzbek ko'lam, Uyghur كولەم (kolem, volume).
