From Proto-Slavic *lьgъkъ, from a pre-Slavic *h₁ln̥gʷʰ-u-ko, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁lengʷʰ- (light). Cognates include Sanskrit लघु (laghú), Ancient Greek ἐλαφρός (elaphrós) and ἐλαχύς (elakhús), Latin levis and Old English lēoht (English light).
