From Proto-Slavic *milъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *meiʔlos, from Proto-Indo-European *meyl-.

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian mielas (nice, deer, sweet), Latvian mĩl̨š (sweet, dear, kind), Old Prussian mijls (sweet, dear).

Other Indo-European cognates include Latin mītis (of soft taste) and Greek meília.
