[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *pъlkovodьcь. By surface analysis, полк (polk, “host, army”) + -а- (-a-) + вадзіць (vadzicʹ, “to lead”) + -ец (-jec). Compare Russian полково́дец (polkovódec).
