Inherited from Proto-Slavic *pъlkovodьcь. By surface analysis, полк (polk, host, army) +‎ -а- (-a-) +‎ вадзіць (vadzicʹ, to lead) +‎ -ец (-jec). Compare Russian полково́дец (polkovódec).
