Derived via Western European languages from Ancient Greek παῖς, παιδός (paîs, paidós, child) and ῑ̓ᾱτρείᾱ (īātreíā, curing, healing, medical treatment), from ἰατρός (iatrós, physician). Compare Russian педиатри́я (pediatríja), Belarusian педыятры́я (pjedyjatrýja).
