Bulgarian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *pytati (to ask, examine). Akin via ablaut to Old Church Slavonic непъщевати (nepŭštevati, not to doubt, not to question).

Pronunciation

[edit]

Verb

[edit]

пи́там (pítam) first-singular present indicativeimpf

  1. to ask, to question, to enquire, to query
  2. to ask permission

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Although пи́там does not officially have or require a perfective form, попи́там can be used. For example, "I want to ask him something" is commonly rendered as „искам нещо да го питам“, which uses the imperfective verb with a "perfective meaning". It would also be correct to say „искам нещо да го попитам“, but it's not grammatically required.
